The Chinese Shar-Pei is not just an ancient breed, it is a «basal» breed, a term given to breeds that have much less mixed DNA than more «modern» breeds, making it difficult to ascertain true origins . Six breeds are considered «basal» and the Shar-Pei is one of them.
The genre is believed to have roots at least as far back as the Han Dynasty (around 200 BC) as evidenced by surviving fired clay statues (one such statue is on display in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco). The Shar-Pei originated in Guangzhou, specifically Tai Li, a small village in Kwangtung province. He was prized as a versatile, general utility dog kept by rural farmers. For their owners, they protected livestock, served as a guardian, companion, and hunting dog when chasing wild boar (at least one Oriental scholar, Jean Yu, claimed that the original Shar-Pei was the mongoose based on the study of manuscripts). Later, the dogs were introduced to fighting roles for entertainment and income for gamblers.

A good guard dog, the Shar-Pei does not require a lot of space, making it a good fit for apartment living. For exercise, a daily walk will suit this pet very well. This breed does well with children and cats if they are raised with them and bonds well with all close family members. He must be aloof and rude to strangers, he must be well socialized. Needs a dominant master, the Chinese Shar-Pei needs a good leader to avoid inappropriate behavior. A clean breed, he doesn’t shed often and only needs regular brushing and bathing.
Increase Exercise
Taking your dog for a walk, hike or run are fun and rewarding ways to incorporate daily exercise into your schedule. Studies have shown that dog owners are much more likely to attend daily exercise. Exercising every day is also great for the dog. It will deepen the bond between you, eradicate most behavioral problems in dogs and keep your pet healthy.
Companionship can help prevent illness and even add years to your life, while isolation and loneliness can trigger symptoms of depression. Caring for a live animal can help you feel needed and wanted and take the focus off your problems, especially if you live alone. Most dog owners talk to their dogs, some even use them to work out their problems. And nothing beats loneliness like coming home with a tail and wet kisses.
