The Shar Pei Labrador mix is often called a Lab Pei. While any mixed-breed dog can come about by chance, a deliberate Shar Pei and Lab crossbreed as a «designer» mix goes back only a few decades. We can learn more about the potential of this combination by looking at the parent sexes.
What Makes a Bear Coat Shar Pei Special?
The Shar Pei breed originated in China. He was bred to be a fighting dog and even shares ancestry with the Chow Chow. Shar Peis are purebred dogs with no known crossbreeding.
The traditional Shar Pei is already a special dog, but when you add the plush fur to the mix from Bear Coat, you have a dog that is sure to turn heads.
Origins of the Labradoodle
The first known Labradoodle was bred in 1988 by an Australian breeder named Wally Conron. He originally bred this hybrid specifically for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia in Victoria. The purpose of the Labradoodle was to combine the intelligence and good nature of the Labrador Retriever with the hypoallergenic coats of the Poodle so that they could be used as guide dogs for those with allergies. The hybrid was so successful that there was a bit of a frenzy among breeders in North America and Australia to combine poodles with almost any breed they could think of.
Goldendoodles were first bred in 1969 by Monica Dickens, granddaughter of famous author Charles Dickens. They gained popularity in the 1990s as a response to the success of Labradoodles. They were the offspring of purebred poodles and purebred Golden Retrievers. The resulting hybrid was an attractive and well-tempered animal with many positive traits, including a low coat that did not shed.
