If your collie is chewing on your furniture, it could be a sign that your collie is not getting enough mental stimulation and is bored, or that he doesn’t have (or can’t find) another toy to play with.
A great short-term fix for furniture chewing is to use a chewing gum spray, which is a harmless but tasteless spray that will prevent your collie from chewing on table legs, chair legs, leather couches, or other furniture.
What chews are good for Border Collie puppies?
When looking for dog-friendly chews, it’s important to make sure they’re safe for puppies. You can ask your local vet for a recommendation who I’m sure will be happy to help.
Personally, we used to provide our Border Collie puppy with stuffed Kongs from their puppy group.
Why does a Border Collie chew your furniture?
Dogs that are left alone for long periods of time are especially prone to this type of behavior. You can prevent your dog from chewing furniture by providing them with plenty of toys and chew bones to keep them occupied.
Puppies start teething at around twelve weeks of age and the whole teething process can last up to two months. During this time, your puppy may be more likely to chew on furniture as his gums are sore.
You can help soothe your puppy’s gums by giving them cold water to drink and chew toys designed for puppy teething.
Teething Biting and Chewing
First we’re going to look at some ways to help your puppy. As with humans, when a puppy reaches a certain age they lose their ‘baby teeth’ and at this time it can be uncomfortable for them.
As a way to combat discomfort, puppies will often start chewing on anything available. Ideally these would be their own toys, but this isn’t always the case and if we can save your shoes, we will!
iii) A puppy that chews because he doesn’t know better
You shouldn’t expect your puppy to know if he can chew things or not when you haven’t trained them . Puppies are not born with the ability to tell the difference between their chew toys and your expensive shoes or furniture.
If you catch your Border Collie chewing things he shouldn’t, take the opportunity to let him know he’s doing something wrong. You can do this by getting his attention, telling him «No» and then letting him focus on the things he gets to chew on, like his toys.
